The former Argentina player, famous for his "hand of God" goal, is one of the many characters lampooned by funnyman Jonathan Watson in the popular show.

Maradona made his debut appearance as the Argentine team's national coach in Scotland in November.

And following that he is to be featured in Only An Excuse for the first time, when the show is broadcast on BBC One Scotland on New Year's Eve.

Other famous faces to be lampooned by Watson and the rest of the team include Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson and Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood, as well as sports reporter Raman Bhardwaj and weatherman Sean Batty - who both feature on STV Scotland Today.

BBC bosses revealed details of the show, which will form part of their Hogmanay line-up.

Jackie Bird and Hardeep Singh Kohli will host Hogmanay Live 2008 from the Great Hall of Edinburgh Castle.

And they will be joined by singer Sharleen Spiteri, performing tracks from her new album, and last year's X Factor winner Leon Jackson.
